St. Gertrude Prayer

The St. Gertrude Prayer, also known as the Prayer for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, is a Catholic prayer said to be a powerful means of assisting the souls in purgatory and obtaining their release from purification. This prayer is attributed to St. Gertrude the Great, a 13th-century German Benedictine mystic and theologian. It is believed that Jesus revealed this prayer to her in a vision.

Here is the St. Gertrude Prayer

“Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the Universal Church, for those in my own home, and in my family. Amen.”

The St. Gertrude Prayer is often recited for the following purposes:

  1. For the Holy Souls in Purgatory: One of the primary intentions of this prayer is to offer the Precious Blood of Jesus for the souls in purgatory. It is believed that through this prayer, the souls may receive relief from their suffering and eventually attain the glory of heaven.

  2. For the Conversion of Sinners: The prayer also asks for God’s mercy and forgiveness for sinners, both within and outside the Church. It is a plea for God’s grace to touch and convert those who have strayed from the faith or are living in sin.

  3. For One’s Family and Home: The prayer extends its intercession to one’s own family and household, asking for God’s blessings and protection.
